THE CSIRO has provided its FLECK smart wireless sensor network technology to SEQWater to monitor the Lake Wivenhoe catchment in Queensland.
The system consists of 120 FLECK sensor nodes operating in a meshed network, wirelessly transferring any environmental data they have collected.
SEQWater and the CSIRO say they will be able to use the technology to monitor high rainfall, droughts and contaminants in real-time.
According to the CSIRO, the FLECK sensors could be the platform for the next generation of water quality monitoring systems. The body claims the sensors provide real-time data collection with unprecedented detail and speed.
The solution also includes an autonomous solar-powered catamaran which can be instructed by the network to carry out more detailed sampling if required.
The sensor network includes 70 land-based sensor nodes spread across the catchment area and 45 floating units, which measure water temperature.
The CSIRO says the sensor system is manually controlled through a PDA, web interface or web-enabled mobile phones.
