CSIRO staffers to help develop global web standard for sensors

THE CSIRO says two of its ICT Centre staff members will take on leading roles in the development of global standards for sharing information collected by sensors and sensor networks over the Internet.

Dr Kerry Taylor and Amit Parashar will co-chair the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Semantic Sensor Network incubator group. The group will create a new standard, allowing sensors to interact over the web through the W3C’s XML format.

The Semantic Sensor Network incubator group’s technology will allow sensors and sensor networks to interoperate over the Internet. The CSIRO says this have implications for industrial maintenance and management as well as for environmental monitoring practices.

According to the CSIRO, the research into sensors and sensor networks could lead to better quality data at reduced costs.

The W3C is an international body responsible for developing global internet standards. It develops specifications, guidelines, software and web-based tools.
